Closer to God

May 22, 2012 by

We had a really, great message in church Sunday; I want to share a few things I learned from that message.

Are you like me and always say that you want to get closer to God, but don’t really know how? It is actually quite simple, read God’s word. Lose yourself in the Bible. It might not always seem like you are gaining anything from it at the time but you are gaining wisdom from the scriptures. You will later be able to remember those scriptures and will be able to call upon those promises in a time of need.

I remember as a child memorizing scripture; I can still remember those scriptures today! I love when my children memorize a verse or even passages; they can do it so easily and hopefully they will remember them forever. As adults we should also memorize scripture. It would be nice to be able to recall a promise from God when we face problems in our life. Reading God’s word will enable us to find these promises.

I have been trying to memorize several verses that I found to help while I am running; verses that promise strength and power. There are times when I want to quit because I am in pain or tired and all that I can do is quote verses in my head to keep me going.

If you have a favorite verse or verses that you have memorized please share them in the comments below; I would love to hear everyone’s favorite!

I don’t have any scripture memorized yet, but I hope to. I often have that feeling that I want/need to be closer, but I don’t know always know how. Reading His word is always the answer, it’s just hard to get out of that rut and form a new routine. I’ve also heard if this book about 100 verses every Christian should know that I hope to read soon. Anyway, I enjoyed reading this!

Matthew 7:7-8 in the NLT bible is pretty awesome and has come to me and my family at the perfect time.

And I am with you about service being great Sunday. 2Timothy3:14-17 and James 1:21-25 are not memorized verses for me, but I have enjoyed reading and studying them:)

  3. Great post!!!

I’ve found that eating one verse at a time always helps. Writing verses on sticky notes and pasting them in the places you frequent in your house is good also. I listen to the Bible, and I find things lodged in my memory that I didn’t even know were there, well until a problem arises that pulls them from the subconscious to the conscious. But take it one verse at a time.
